How Milk Pricing Works in India

In India, milk is uniquely priced based on both fat percentage and SNF percentage. This is different from most other countries where only fat content is tested. Here's how the pricing works:

The Richmond/SCM Formula

Price = (Fat × Fat Factor) + (SNF × SNF Factor) − Adjustment

Each cooperative and dairy uses its own factors and adjustment values. For example:

  • Fat Factor: Typically ₹4–₹6 per 1% fat (varies by cooperative)
  • SNF Factor: Typically ₹2–₹4 per 1% SNF (varies by cooperative)
  • Adjustment: A fixed deduction that covers processing costs (typically ₹5–₹15)

Four Common Pricing Methods

Indian cooperatives use different methods depending on their setup:

Method 1 — FAT-Based Pricing (most common for small dairies):
Rate per liter = FAT% × Rate per FAT unit
Example: 6.5% fat × ₹8.50 = ₹55.25/L

Method 2 — Two-Axis Pricing (FAT + SNF) (used by Amul, KMF):
Rate = (FAT% × FAT rate) + (SNF% × SNF rate)
Example: (4.0 × ₹7.00) + (8.5 × ₹3.50) = ₹57.75/L

Method 3 — TS Rate (Total Solids):
Rate = (FAT + SNF) × Rate per TS unit
Example: (6.0 + 9.0) × ₹4.00 = ₹60.00/L

Method 4 — Fixed Rate (small milkmen):
Flat rate per liter, no testing. Cow: ₹55–70/L, Buffalo: ₹70–90/L

Example Pricing Calculation

Suppose your buffalo milk tests at 6.0% fat, 9.2% SNF, and CLR 29°. Using typical cooperative factors:

Rate = (6.0 × ₹5.50) + (9.2 × ₹3.00) + CLR Adj
Rate = ₹33.00 + ₹27.60 + ₹0.00 = ₹60.60 per liter
For 10 liters: ₹606.00 total payment

Your cooperative may use different factors, so always check their current rate chart.

SNF = (0.25 × लैक्टोमीटर रीडिंग) + (0.22 × फैट %) + 0.36

Frequently Asked Questions

How is milk price calculated in India?

In India, milk cooperatives and private dairies pay based on both fat percentage and SNF (Solids-Not-Fat) percentage. The pricing formula typically follows the Richmond or SCM (Solids Corrected Milk) method: Price = (Fat × Factor) + (SNF × Factor) - Adjustment. The factors and adjustment vary by cooperative and region. Our calculator shows indicative fair price ranges based on FSSAI quality standards.

What is a fair milk price per liter in India?

Fair milk prices in India depend on fat%, SNF%, and local cooperative rates. As a general reference, whole buffalo milk (6% fat, 9% SNF) typically commands ₹55–₹70 per liter, while toned cow milk (3% fat, 8.5% SNF) ranges from ₹38–₹50 per liter. Enter your fat and SNF values in the calculator above to see the indicative range for your specific milk quality.

How does fat percentage affect milk price?

Fat percentage is one of the two main factors that determine milk price in India. Higher fat means the milk is richer and more valuable for making butter, ghee, and cream. For every 1% increase in fat, the price per liter typically increases by ₹4–₹6, depending on your cooperative's pricing formula. Buffalo milk (5–7% fat) commands a higher price than cow milk (3.5–4.5% fat) primarily due to this fat premium.

How does SNF affect milk price?

SNF (Solids-Not-Fat) represents protein, lactose, and minerals in milk. Higher SNF means more nutritional value and better quality milk. For every 1% increase in SNF, the price per liter typically increases by ₹2–₹4. Milk with SNF below 8.5% (FSSAI minimum for toned milk) may be penalized or rejected by cooperatives.

What is CLR and how does it affect milk rate?

CLR (Corrected Lactometer Reading) measures milk density and is used to detect water adulteration. Normal CLR range is 26–32°. Values below 26 indicate possible watering; values above 32 may indicate added solids. Some cooperatives adjust the base rate based on CLR — milk with CLR in the 28–30° range typically receives the standard rate.

What is the FSSAI minimum standard for milk?

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) sets minimum quality standards for milk: Toned milk requires minimum 3.0% fat and 8.5% SNF; Whole milk requires minimum 4.5% fat and 8.7% SNF; Double toned milk requires minimum 1.5% fat and 8.4% SNF. Milk below these standards may be considered adulterated and is subject to penalties.

Why do different dairies pay different rates?

Different cooperatives and private dairies use different pricing formulas, factors, and adjustments based on their processing costs, product mix (liquid milk vs. milk products), and regional market conditions. Amul (GCMMF), Mother Dairy, Nandini (Karnataka), and other cooperatives each have their own rate charts that change monthly. Our calculator shows indicative ranges, not exact rates.

Can I use this calculator for buffalo milk and cow milk?

Yes. The calculator works for all types of milk — buffalo, cow, goat, or mixed. Simply enter the correct fat% and SNF% values for your milk sample. Buffalo milk typically has higher fat (5–7%) and SNF (8.8–9.5%), while cow milk has lower fat (3.5–4.5%) and SNF (8.3–8.7%). The calculator will show the appropriate price range based on your input values.

What are current Amul milk prices in 2026?
